The Port of Gothenburg in Sweden has announced refurbishment plans for its energy port which includes the rebuilding of its 300m-long Kustkajen quay, with the aim of enabling the transition to renewable fuels.

The Kustkajen quay will be referred to as “Kustkajen 2.0,” with the construction work beginning in 2026 and spanning until 2031.

According to the Port, the project aligns with its long-term ambition of being Scandinavia’s largest hub for renewable energy.

The key developments at the port include new foundations, the reconstruction of the Kustkajen quay, and improvements to layout and equipment.

Erik Hallgren, vice president of infrastructure at the Gothenburg Port Authority, emphasised how the refurbishment will enhance the quay’s lifespan.

Hallgren said: “Kustkajen 2.0 is an immensely important investment for the Port of Gothenburg, where we also ensure to further strengthen the opportunities for society’s transition to renewable energy sources, which will only accelerate during the quay’s lifespan.”
